CARMINA BURANA

Fate or freedom?  Divine rule or personal fulfillment?  A band of
renegade monks journey through colourful landscapes and drink deeply of the
offerings of this world.  Along the way they meet Fate herself, an angel, a
devil, lovers, a cowboy, a taskmaster -- even a barmaid!  These figures and many more
illuminate the shadow and light found in the human soul.

So come and soar through the themes of spring, tavern life and love and plunge into the magical imagery of Carl Orff's CARMINA BURANA.  Through MOTUS O's succinct weaving of an operatic score, live video footage, stunning costumes and the physical realm of dance theatre this production brings to you a total theatrical experience!

Here is one.

MOTUS O dance theatre’s

CARMINA BURANA

Weaving pathos and comedy through dance and song, MOTUS O throws open the flood gates of creativity. Gods, monks, lovers and devils all inhabit the world of Carmina Burana, lead in a dance of life and death by the Goddess of fate, Fortuna.

In this adaptation of Carmina Burana performers and stilt walkers crawl, leap, writhe and toss each other across stage.  Enhanced by live video footage and stunning costumes MOTUS O dance theatre lends enormous physical energy to this well loved opera.

About the Story:

The story of Carmina Burana begins with the world in chaos. Fortuna, the Goddess of Fate comes and releases humans into the discovery of creativity. The rest of the opera is about that journey. Love, friendship, lusts and passions are all played out in dance.

Here is another.

In the 12th Century  Germany a number of  monks and minor clerics began to

spill out there monastic lives onto the highways and by-ways of an exciting

world. Little is know why they were cast out and excommunicated from the

lives that some of them had know since birth, And nothing is know of

individuals of this band of brother except they became know as the Vaga

Monks .The “Vagabound Monks”. Or as they liked to call themselves,

Goliard ( “wandering students of life”).  Numbering over 80 they traveled

the roads of Germany selling their ability to read and write to whoever had

the coin to pay. At times they came together informally to share with each

other ( and any growing crowd) personnel poetry that expressed their views

on life, humanity, politics and religion. It is important to add here that at the

time the catholic church dominated litrature and art. Many subjects were

deemed “secular” and where declared unfit to be painted, discussed or

written about. But our friend the Goliards set loose from a religious driven

mandate felt no need to comply. Therefore many of the over two hundred

poems that survived from this time dealt with themes of love and lusts ,

human desires and humour. Yes humour. Comic writing was forbidden since

the 3rd century. A long time to go without a laugh.  The Goliards attacked

this with the feroucity of a lioness on its prey.  Nothing seemed sacred to

them , all aspects of life where open for exploration, open to reason, open for

When Carl Orff came upon a translation of these collected poems in a

creative force of the writings. Through the satire. The humour and erotic

verse there was a great reverance  for life  that shone through. Sacred means

“ to be set apart for special attention” the Vagabond Monks had done this for

life itself, to do less , it seemed to them, would be to ignore the gift God had

given them.

Carl Orff’s  music reflects that lust for life.

If a life was given ,  then it was to be lived.

If a life is to be lived,  then it must be in the given.

With all the repect, talent and love we have.

It is in this spirit that we give you this production of Carmina Burana.

 Enjoy
